# Brain Cat — provenance and limitations

## Brain geometry

CATLAS, Daniel Stolzberg, Christina Wong, Blake E. Butler and Stephen G. Lomber (2017).

https://github.com/CerebralSystemsLab/CATLAS

The 74 original Slicer VTK region surfaces were converted to typed binary buffers.
Duplicate aliases for region 32 and 36 were excluded. Coordinates were transformed
from Slicer RAS to Y-up (x, z, -y), uniformly scaled and centered. Triangle strips
were converted to triangles. Surfaces were divided at the midsagittal plane by
triangle centroid to enable hemisphere separation. No mirroring or fabricated
anatomical surfaces were used. 148 selectable pieces represent 74 source labels,
not 148 independently annotated brain regions. The colors and six navigation
groups are editorial adaptations. The cerebellum is a supplied coarse surface.
Atlas region surfaces do not imply a full segmentation of all deep structures.

The source repository does not contain an explicit standalone data license.
Rights in the original atlas remain with its authors; the attribution above does
not assign it an invented open-source license. This is an attributed educational
visualization. Consult the original authors for redistribution permissions beyond
the terms of the source publication and repository.

## Black cat portrait

Illustrated black cat supplied by the user. The surrounding background was removed with image editing; the original artwork retains its existing rights. No new licence is asserted.
The transparent PNG is a visual illustration, not a CATLAS specimen. Brain placement
and the zoom/reveal transition are schematic rather than a registered anatomical scan.
The CATLAS brain geometry remains independent of this image.

## Educational models

The branching neuron, myelin, fiber trajectories, moving markers, and orientation
response plots are original schematic illustrations. They are not reconstructed
cat neurons, measured tractography, a whole-brain simulation or evidence of
consciousness. Animation time is arbitrary. Orientation tuning is a pedagogical
Gaussian in angular distance, with a preferred orientation of 45 degrees.

## Interface and software

Inspired by Human Atlas, https://github.com/ashemag/human-atlas . No application
code or BodyParts3D meshes copied from that project.
Three.js r180, MIT, license in vendor/THREE-LICENSE.txt.
Golos Text typeface distributed through Google Fonts (SIL Open Font License).

Research checked 13 September 2026. The absence of a complete feline synaptic
connectome is stated for the reviewed sources, not as an exhaustive claim about
all unpublished or future scientific work.

The Brain Cat visual redesign uses physical surface shading on the original CATLAS meshes, without inventing extra anatomical resolution. Dynamic coloured fibres link selected region centroids for illustration; their trajectories, pulses, wave and burst patterns are not measured connectivity or neuronal dynamics.
