An unofficial hand-drawn take on Don't Starve, in one offline HTML file. Play a gentleman scientist through an unwelcoming autumn: explore, gather, craft, and keep the fire lit after dark.

Eternal Wilderness (永恒荒野) is an unofficial hand-drawn take on Don't Starve, packed into a single offline HTML file. You play a gentleman scientist dropped into an unfriendly autumn grassland with a fifteen-slot bag and no instructions beyond the one that matters: do not let the fire go out.

It keeps the shape of the game it is imitating — day counter, season, temperature, gather and craft, night as the real enemy — and puts a soft illustrated look on it. Field notes appear as you go rather than a tutorial.

How to play Eternal Wilderness

  1. WASD to move, E to gather what you are standing next to, F to attack.
  2. Number keys 1 to 9 use whatever is in that bag slot. The bag holds fifteen things and fills up fast.
  3. Press H for the survival handbook, N to explore, M for the map of where you have been. Scroll to zoom.
  4. Gather during daylight, build a fire before dusk. Everything in this genre is a rehearsal for the first night.
  5. Watch the season and temperature readout in the corner — the run starts in autumn, and autumn does not last.

Controls: WASD to move, E to gather, F to attack, 1–9 for items, H for the survival handbook, M for the map.

Why it's worth your time

It is a half-megabyte file that boots straight into a world with a day cycle, gathering, crafting, combat, an inventory and a map. Whatever it lacks against the game it is copying, the ratio of systems to bytes here is remarkable.

The interface is in Chinese and the character names are Chinese transliterations of the original's. It runs offline once loaded and wants a keyboard and mouse.

How it was made and where it lives

Hosted on the author's own page. The author publishes as dudu. Original: https://starve.pages.dev/. The Play button above runs our own unmodified copy, so the game keeps working here if that page goes down — which on free hosting usually has nothing to do with the author. Nothing about the game itself is changed, and the original stays linked from every page.

If you like Eternal Wilderness, try these

Hypoxia · Little Planet is the other survival game here, played as a colony rather than a person. For crafting-adjacent building without the night, try Jelly Baby.
