An automatic sumo game where one rendered character becomes the entire wrestler: dense strokes add weight, openings change collisions and the glyph itself determines the bout.

一文字相扑 / Ichimoji Sumo makes a single printed character into a complete sumo wrestler. Its outline becomes the collision body, dense strokes influence weight and every hole or gap can change how it catches an opponent.

The local copy adds a Chinese start guide rather than claiming a complete package translation. The original Godot canvas remains Japanese because the rendered glyph is the mechanic; Chinese characters are especially suitable inputs for the same reason.

How to play 一文字相扑 · Ichimoji Sumo

  1. Enter or choose exactly one character. A kanji or Chinese character with many strokes tends to be dense and heavy, while a simpler shape may turn or recover more easily.
  2. Start the bout and watch both glyphs move automatically. There are no steering controls once the match begins.
  3. The first fighter to leave the ring loses. A bout lasts no longer than twenty seconds, preventing two stable shapes from remaining locked forever.
  4. Win to climb the ranks and meet larger, heavier opponents. One defeat ends the current run, and the browser retains the highest rank reached.

Controls: Enter one character and start the match. The fighters move automatically; the first character pushed or rolled out of the ring loses.

Why it's worth your time

Typography is physics here. The visible contour is not a label placed on a generic body: it is the body, so changing one character changes contact points, leverage and balance.

Chinese localization works better as guidance than an English substitution. Han characters preserve the dense, varied geometry that makes the matchups interesting, while a small Latin alphabet would narrow the possibilities.

The match is deterministic enough to invite comparison. Trying characters with similar meanings but radically different structures becomes its own experiment.

How it was made and where it lives

Hosted on the author's own page. The author publishes as Hajime Amoto / あもとはじめ (@amotohajime). Original: https://aamt.app/en/ichimoji-sumo. The Play button opens a self-hosted copy with a Chinese pre-game guide. The original Japanese Godot canvas stays intact because character shapes are the hitboxes and weights; the source page remains linked for attribution.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to read Japanese?
The canvas remains Japanese, but the Chinese introduction explains the full loop: choose one character, start, and stay inside the ring.
Can I enter Chinese characters?
Yes. A character's rendered shape supplies its collision body, so Chinese glyphs fit the core mechanic directly.
How long is a match?
At most twenty seconds. The first character outside the ring loses.
Is the whole game translated?
No. The local page adds a Chinese guide while preserving the original Japanese Godot package and glyph behavior.
