Fly a carpet around a tiny spherical world: thread golden rings, skim the ground for speed, cast three spells and outrun rotating bosses. Two players can also race ghosts on one keyboard.

Magic Carpet Wizard — A Thousand Skies is an endless 3D flying arcade game set on a tiny spherical world, so the horizon always curves away in front of you. You ride a carpet down a 108-metre-wide corridor of procedurally generated desert cities, gardens, canyons and river valleys, threading golden rings, skimming the ground for speed and casting spells at whatever is shooting back.

It is not a one-button flyer. Fireball, lightning and wind blast are all available from the start, spells level up permanently while timed boosts stack on top, and a run ends after three hits. Bosses begin at 2,600 metres and rotate between four encounters. There is also a hot-seat race mode where two players take turns on one keyboard and chase each other's saved ghost.

The author, threapchills, states in the repository that it was built with GPT-6 Astra. It is written in Three.js and Vite, and every model, texture, particle and sky effect is generated in code rather than loaded as an asset.

How to play Magic Carpet Wizard

  1. Press Enter or click Take Flight to start — that same click is what unlocks the audio.
  2. W and S climb and dive, A and D steer. Skimming below 3.5 metres gives you extra speed and power, so the ground is where the points are.
  3. Hold the left mouse button to aim and cast. Keys 1, 2 and 3 pick fireball, lightning or wind blast, and Q cycles through them.
  4. Tap space above 4 metres to barrel roll — it dodges enemy projectiles and feeds your scoring chain. Hold Shift for the skyfire boost, which keeps your speed at any altitude but drains power.
  5. Esc or P pauses, M mutes, R restarts. Choose Race a friend from the title screen for the two-player hot-seat mode over easy, medium or hard courses.

Controls: Desktop mouse and keyboard, WebGL 2 required. W/S climb and dive, A/D steer, hold left click to cast, 1/2/3 pick a spell, Shift boosts, Space barrel-rolls.

Click Fullscreen above the game for the largest play area. If the game does not load, use Open in new tab to play it directly from our copy.

Why it's worth your time

The look is deliberate: light is quantised into three cel-shaded bands and a screen-space pass draws black ink contours over the top, fading them into the fog. The author cites Sable and Chants of Sennaar as references for the feeling and states that no artwork or assets from those games are used.

There is no background music. The ambience is mixed live from nine overlapping excerpts, steered by which of the seven procedural zones you are in and by the height, speed, wind, rain and time of day. Your best distance, best score and race ghosts are saved in your browser.

It needs a desktop browser with WebGL 2, a mouse and a keyboard — there are no touch controls. We keep a copy of the author's GitHub Pages build, all 1.8 MB of it including the nine ambience recordings, so the game survives the repository being archived or Pages being switched off. The repository carries no licence file, so that copy exists on the author's goodwill rather than on a permission: threapchills, if you would rather we linked to you instead of hosting it, the address in the footer reaches a human and the copy comes down.

How it was made and where it lives

Published on GitHub Pages from a public repository. The author publishes as threapchills. Original: https://threapchills.github.io/MagicCarpetWizard/. The Play button above runs our own unmodified copy, so the game keeps working here if that page goes down — which on free hosting usually has nothing to do with the author. Nothing about the game itself is changed, and the original stays linked from every page.

If you like Magic Carpet Wizard, try these

The other flying game here is Mosswing, which is the opposite end of the same idea: one key, no combat, no score chain. For 3D worlds you explore instead of race through, try DUST II · Desert Ops or Infinite Garden; for another downhill-speed game, SUNBREAK.

Frequently asked questions

Is my progress saved?
Best distance, best score and race ghost recordings are stored locally in your browser. Weapon levels reset with each run.
Is there a multiplayer mode?
There is a local hot-seat race: two players take turns on the same keyboard and race each other's recorded ghost. There is no online play.
